Along with Delhi, which has witnessed 2,301 deaths to date, Mumbai and Delhi account for more than 40 per cent of the total number of deaths in the country reported due to COVID-19.Delhi alone has confirmed 66,602 positive cases so far as the spread of the coronavirus shows no signs of abetting. This is an alarming situation given the population in both metropolitan areas are among the highest in the country. Among the top ten states with the maximum caseload, Delhi is growing at the fastest rate as the state continues to grapple with high demand for beds and treatment facilities. Although the figures seem to be worsening by the day, the number of recoveries continue to be much higher than the number of active cases in the country.The Union ministry of health has said that the fatality rate for COVID-19 in India is one of the lowest in the world, at one death per one lakh population. This is much lower than the global average of 6.04. The Centre said that this has been made possible because of the cumulative efforts taken by the central and state governments in tackling the spread of the coronavirus.
