Delhi recorded 306 Covid-19 deaths in 24 hours on Thursday, the highest since the pandemic began a year ago. It comes at a time when new cases continue to rise exponentially and there is an acute shortage of critical facilities. Hospitals say the death numbers may go up further if the availability of oxygen support, ICU and ventilator beds isn’t augmented fast. Testing has reduced significantly in Delhi over the past few days even as the infection is surging. Doctors say this will adversely affect timely diagnosis, isolation and treatment of Covid-19 patients. “Testing, tracking and treating are the main pillars of Covid management,” said a doctor. The number of Covid-protocol funerals in the city continues to spike, with the civic report stating that 432 such funerals took place on Wednesday till 7pm — up from 193 on April 16.
